Recipe: BBQ Naan Bread Pizza with Chorizo and Goat Cheese

If you’re like me and live somewhere like Vancouver, where 3/4 of the year’s weather renders that BBQ out on the deck totally useless … those few precious months when you do get to enjoy grilled tastiness on a weekly (or daily) basis are pure magnificence. Last weekend, I tried a few things for the first time in one meal—putting very non-traditional toppings on a pizza, using naan bread instead of pizza dough, and grilling the pizza on the BBQ. And, you know what?—the finished product turned out absolutely scrumptious. The best thing is, you can can substitute any and all of the ingredients for your faves, even if they’re more traditional toppings like pepperoni and mozza. But, come one, being creative is so much more fun! Here’s my (very simple) recipe for making an amazing BBQ grilled naan bread pizza. I loved the combination of goat cheese and chorizo; and adding the avocado made the toppings super rich and creamy. Utter bliss!

naan bread (or flatbread, or thick pita), 1 per serving
Italian chorizo sausage, 1 per serving
pizza sauce (or tomato sauce—I used roasted garlic), about 1/4 cup per serving
1 log crumbled goat cheese
1/2 cup chopped green onions (or chives)
2 avocados, cut into cubes
1 tsp red pepper
1/2 cup olive oil

  1. Spread olive oil on one side of each naan, and grill (oiled side down) on the BBQ on medium heat for a few minutes, until grilled
  2. Meanwhile, crumble up the chorizo sausages (I took mine out of the casing first, but that’s a personal preference) and fry on a skillet on medium-high heat for about 8-10 minutes, until browned
  3. When naan is ready, cover the grilled side with some pizza sauce, top with goat cheese, chives, avocado, and cooked chorizo
  4. Sprinkle with red pepper
  5. Put back on the BBQ for another couple of minutes, until the cheese is melted
  6. Enjoy!
